inspired by the most marvelous nature camp and all of the fairy houses, visits, and activities there - and by grace and her fairy visits (and wonderful resources, thank you grace), we had a fairy visiting our home last week.
the fairy met my children at nature camp - saw them in the woods, really - noticed how joyful they are, how respectful of and enchanted by nature, how friendly, how willing they are to be amazed, and she came to spend some time with them here at home.
on monday last week, when the kids came home from camp, there was a long note from the fairy waiting for them in which she introduced herself and explained that she'd be visiting for a few days. she left the children little boxes with bubbles and some glass beads that came with instructions to keep them safe until later in the week. every afternoon there were more beads, another note. one day there were sweets. in her notes, the fairy encouraged the children to write to her (notes to be left in the same small boxes and answered the next day), and she let them know that she had shared stories of her life with me to be told to them at bedtime.
the kids were enchanted. even b., at almost eight, looked forward to the notes every afternoon, and wrote notes of his own to the fairy every evening asking questions like "where do you come from," and "can you teach me some magic?" every morning his questions were answered.
at bedtimes, i told the stories of the fairy's life (the ones she had shared with me), tales of how she came to be, where she lives, and about her adventures.
on sunday morning, the fairy left instructions for the kids to string the glass beads they had collected and protected through the week on wire, and hang the wire from the ceiling in their bedrooms to remind them of their fairy friend. she assured them that she'll visit again, that she's always in the woods with them, and that she's never far away.

What an enchanting adventure for them!
